The Detroit Tigers have given up on right-hander Anibal Sanchez. Tigers general manager Al Avila announced on Friday that the team will not pick up the $16 million club option on Sanchez. Instead the Tigers will pay him a $5 million buyout.

Analysis: Sanchez, 34, had a difficult season. He was 3-7 with a 6.41 ERA in 28 appearances, including 17 starts. He allowed 26 home runs in 105 1/3 innings. Sanchez accepted a demotion to Triple-A Toledo during the season with the hope that it would help him regain a spot in the Tigers' rotation.

Murphy underwent surgery to repair damage to the articular cartilage in his right knee, the team announced Friday.

Analysis: Murphy never revealed he was dealing with any injury. He was healthy enough to appear in all five games in the NL Division Series against the Cubs, batting .211 (4-for-19) with two RBIs and hitting a home run in the decisive Game 5 loss. He hit .322 with 23 home runs and 93 RBIs in 144 games in 2017

The Tigers are declining their $16 million option on Sanchez.

Analysis: General manager Al Avila confirmed that Friday following the team's news conference to introduce new manager Ron Gardenhire. The move comes as no surprise after Sanchez slipped badly over the past three seasons. He went 3-7 with a 6.41 ERA in 2017. The Tigers signed the Venezuelan to an $80 million, five-year contract before the 2013 season, and the deal included a $5 million buyout if the Tigers declined the option for 2018.
